Notes from the Director
from the Nov-Jan 2009 Newsletter

It seems as if we’re in pretty troubled times these days as a nation. Financial crises, economic woes, and international strife darken the news everywhere. But if you take a look closer to home, there’s a bright spot right here in your own back yard. Thanks to the positive improvements we’ve implemented over the past five years, the Dundee Township Public Library is becoming a desirable destination for our entire community.

As I approach my fifth anniversary as the director of this library, I’d like to share many of the good things we have accomplished together with the Board, staff, Friends of the Library, community leaders and patrons. Since 2003, we have:
  • fostered the growth of the Friends of the Library from one person to 20. Today, they are an integral part of fundraising for the library as well as a great group of people who enjoy working together. They’ve raised over $25,000 with their book sales, and last year, began funding bus tours to this library for all 2nd grade students in our district—a first for many.

  • listened to your requests for more convenient locations to return materials by putting two book drops west of the Fox River.

  • begun to provide adult and children’s programs at the West Dundee Public Safety Center II.

  • remodeled the library bathrooms in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Recently, we contracted for a building analysis, made the decision to refurbish the current facility and to begin to explore options for a west side expansion.

  • created Home Word Bound for those unable to come to the library, with funds from the EFS Foundation.

  • transformed the “traditional” library into a true community destination by offering diverse programs including a health series, top-notch music performers and multi-cultural events. Our popular “Showtime!” features free movies with refreshments for the entire family.

  • increased the number of our computer terminals, upgraded equipment, implemented a printing and reservation system and began computer classes in English and Spanish.
Most importantly, we are in sound financial shape as we continue to save for the future by allocating money annually into the Special Reserve Fund.

Throughout the years, we have continued to maintain the building, the book and audio-visual collections, diversify the staff and provide excellent service to our patrons.

The Dundee Library’s future is bright. Make it your destination, too.
