Dundee Library asks residents for input on new district name
Send in your ideas by Friday, March 2!

On Jan. 9 the Dundee Township Public Library District Board of Trustees passed an Ordinance to officially identify its existing facility in East Dundee as the “Dundee Library,” and the planned facility inside the Randall Oak Recreation Center as the “Randall Oaks Branch Library.” The board believes naming the library district’s two facilities will help patrons and the communities differentiate them. They are now asking residents to submit their ideas for a new name for the library district as a whole.

The current legal name under which the library does business, “Dundee Township Public Library District,” has been in place since 1981, when residents voted to form a library district. At the time, the words “Dundee Township” described the service area boundaries. This is no longer the case. With the addition of parts of Rutland Township in the early 1990’s, the library’s boundaries included property outside Dundee Township for the first time.

Currently, the service boundaries encompass all of Carpentersville, East Dundee, West Dundee, Sleepy Hollow, and Gilberts as well as parts of Algonquin, Elgin, and Barrington Hills. The library’s Board of Trustees would like the district’s name to better reflect the community served.

“We would like library district residents to have a voice in what the new name for our district will be. We feel that the current name excludes taxpayers who live outside the township boundaries, and we would like to hear from our patrons. In thinking of a new name for the district, we would like people to keep in mind that the purpose of renaming the district is to have the name reflect the whole district,“ said board president Marge Skold.

The library is now asking residents to share their original ideas for a new name for the Library District.

Suggestions will be evaluated according to the following criteria and guidelines.

  1. The new name must end with the words “Public Library District.”
  2. The name must be original; a thorough search will be conducted to ensure the name has not been used by another organization.
  3. There must be a tie-in to our local community, the geographical region, the State, a significant historic feature, or a predominant physical feature of the surrounding area (lakes, rivers, creeks, etc.)
  4. This will be the legal name of the library district, and the one under which we do business.
  5. The name must be marketable and have mass appeal. It will be used both in print and electronically.
  6. It must be easy to remember, and easy to say.
  7. The Dundee Library currently serves residents of Carpentersville, East Dundee, West Dundee, Sleepy Hollow, and Gilberts, as well as parts of Algonquin, Elgin and Barrington Hills.
